Sydney’s Beautiful Northern Beaches
When you think of beaches in Sydney the first ones that come to mind are usually the ones located in the Eastern Suburbs like Bondi, Bronte and Coogee. However looking further a field you can discover that these aren’t necessarily the best this great city has to offer, we bring to you the Northern Beaches!
Palm Beach
First off is the set of one of Australia’s famous TV series ‘Home and Away’, an idyllic location for a beach around 90 minutes north of Sydney’s CBD accessible via the ever efficient public transport system or easy to get to in a car.
With what seems like an endless stretch of golden sand running along side some huge crashing waves leading up to short walk up to one of the most iconic view points in New South Wales. Sitting at the top of the walk is the Barrenjoey Lighthouse overlooking the bay and adding to the setting of the beach.
The Palm Beach area itself is one of the wealthier parts of Sydney which makes this retreat even more special as you look in awe at some of the houses overlooking the beach and in surrounding areas. Take the 1km walk bush walk up to the lighthouse for the best views of the area, perch yourself on one of the many sandstone rocks with a picnic and take it all in, keep an eye out for sea planes coming in to land on the left side of the beach.
If the swell is good you can also sit back and enjoy the local talented surfers glide along the waves as this is a very popular spot for the best surfers in Sydney to gather and show off their skills. Take a dip in the rock pool at the northern part of the beach as the sea can be quite rough due to the constant swell the beach receives. With the beach being so long it never feels busy even during the most popular times of the year so set up stall on the golden sand and take in the sunshine as you hear the waves crash before you.
Narrabeen Beach
Mentioned in the famous beach boys song ‘Surfing USA’ Narrabeen Beach is one of Syndey’s most historic spots set in a beautiful part of the world with a number of beach walks and lagoons enjoyed by locals and tourists a like all year round.
The town of Narrabeen itself is an idyllic place to stroll around up from the lagoon’s tranquil waters which is usually occupied by sail boats and paddle boarders taking advantage of the glass like water as they make their way towards the beach. There is a great 8km long walk to take which helps you see the main spots of Narrabeen including some stunning houses backing onto the lagoon.
Again like most of Sydney’s beaches Narrabeen is home to a beautiful rock pool which saves the hassle of getting thrown around by the big waves this beach experiences and again the setting is gorgeous for a leisurely swim. They have also recently built a tiny river rapids which you can float down on your chosen vessel be it a lilo or your stomach, ending up in the sea making quite the entrance.
Collaroy Beach
Located just south of Narrabeen is the little cove of Collaroy with protection from the winds and swell this is the perfect beach for beginner surfers and a more relaxed place to visit. Plus the added bonus of a beautiful restaurant overlooking the beach and shore line.
The Collaroy restaurant is a brand new establishment under the famous Marivale group who own a number of stunning venues all around the Sydney area, and this is one of their finest works. With delicious food and drink combined with great views of the surrounding areas be sure to visit this modern yet chic venue after a relaxing swim or visit to the beach.
Curl Curl
Located on Sydneys northern beaches between Dee Why and Freshwater, North Curl Curl and South Curl Curl beaches blend into a 1.2 km stretch of beautiful sand dunes and surf. In fact, it is one of Sydneys best surfing beaches, attracting the best surfers in the area daily.
The northern part of the beach has a quiet lagoon that flows into the sea, which is a great area for kids, with its shallow water.
Its mainly frequented by locals here, so it doesnt get nearly as busy as the likes of Manly and Dee Why, but it is close enough for a short trip to either one to immerse yourself in a more bustling vibe.
Curl Curl is a real natural beauty with its rocky headlands, sun-soaked beach, wonderful ocean pool and open parklands and reserve. If your up early enough you can experience a stunning sunrise here that is sure to knock your socks off.
