Costa Rica and Panama
During your 16 days of travelling around the beautiful coastline and central areas of Costa Rica and Panama, youll see the creatures that live within the cloud forest canopy, meet a local tribe and sail through one the worlds busiest and most famous shipping lanes. This is a tour for those with an adventurous spirit and a moderate level of fitness as there will be plenty of excursions included in the package that have to be seen on foot. They may involve uneven terrains, particularly when you venture into the rainforest.
Youll arrive into San Jose, the Costa Rican capital. There you can marvel at the European influenced architecture, as well as the vibrant shops and cafes, where you can try traditional dishes consisting of rice and beans. From here, youll drive to Arenal; a huge volcano located in the centre of the country, taking in a chocolate plantation along the way. If youre a chocolate fan, youll love the sweet stuff from here. Its in its purest and most delicious form.
Arenal is not expected to erupt soon, but you may well see smoke rising from it, or ash being thrown from the top. The hot springs around the base of this active volcano are also well worth experiencing.
Close by, the Mistico Hanging Bridges Park will give you a birds eye view of the rainforest below, from the easy to navigate bridges hanging from between the trees. As most of the wildlife lives up in the canopy, the bridges will bring you closer to the fauna. There are also easy to walk trails below, with a great view of the volcano.
Another plantation stop will follow, where you can try a perfect cup of coffee from the Don Juan coffee estate in Monteverde. Theres a large cloud forest here youll want to explore as well. Your guide, with his or her trained eyes, will point out any wildlife you might have missed, such as birds, frogs, pumas and jaguars.
Panama City will be your next destination. It has plenty of museums to explore, cathedrals and convents. The big attraction here though, is without doubt the Panama Canal Locks, which lift ships 25 metres high. Colon will give you a different view of the famous canal and then its time to visit some picturesque features of the countryside such as the Chorro del Macho waterfall an La India Dormida Mountain.
Next up are two rainforest experiences that youll never forget; lunch with the villagers of the Embera tribe and an exploration of the forest floor of The Gambia rainforest. Your journey will end after a trip to the sandy Caribbean shores of Bocas del Toro. Find out more about this tour here.
Colombia Discovery
As the home of salsa, you can expect to enjoy dancing and live music in Colombia. There will be trips to white sand beaches, a coffee tasting and a visit to the Salt Cathedral. Again, a moderate level of fitness is ideal because, as some high altitude walking is required, youll need to be healthy enough to withstand the pressure on your lungs.
The trip begins in the vibrant capital, Bogot. Here youll discover colonial churches, fascinating museums and exciting galleries. In a small village on the outskirts of the city is where youll find the infamous Salt Cathedral, located 200 metres below ground level in an old salt mine.
In the next place on your schedule; the city of Cali, youll learn all the basics of Latin American dance, so if you come across any impromptu, open air dancing sessions, you can fit right in and at least look like you know what youre doing.
Its deep into Colombias coffee region next, youll head over to Armenia, where youll learn the art of smelling and tasting coffee. After these heady smells and flavours , youll be pleased of the fresh air of the Corcoran Valley nature reserve. Not only will you see the national tree there, the palma de cera, but also get to check out local arts and crafts.
Youll have a few days in Medellin next; Colombias boho, arty, second city, with its botanical gardens and parks, before embarking on your way to your final destinations. Your journey will end in the coastal city of Santa Marta, with its stretches of golden sand, rainforest and natural pools, Cartagena, a UNESCO world heritage city with plenty to see and do and the Rosario islands, whose tropical beaches are perfect for snorkelling and exploring the coral reef below the waves.
