ItineraryDay 1: St. Johns, Newfoundland – Tour BeginsYour journey opens in the colorful coastal city of St. Johns. The province’s capital city is a delightful blend of old-world charm and new-world elegance. Day 2: St. JohnsMeet your fellow travelers at this mornings breakfast. Then come to know North Americas oldest and easternmost city on a tour highlighting Signal Hill, Cape Spear lighthouse, Government House and the Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Continue on to tour the quaint fishing harbor of Quidi Vidi Village. Watch for puffins while on a nature cruise to Witless Bay Ecological Reserve where millions of seabirds gather to nest. A local specialist joins us for a talk on the marine life in the region, especially the thousands of Humpback and Minke whales who make this their home. Day 3: St. Johns – Clarenville AreaNavigate the picturesque coastal drive that surrounds stunning Conception Bay. Make a stop in charming Brigus to spend some time in a traditional Newfoundland fishing village. Then its on to Cupids Cove Plantation, an active archaeological dig on the site of the first attempt at permanent English settlement in what would become Canada. Join an expert for a private tour at Cupids Legacy Centre revealing life in the early 1600s and get to know the culture during a musical performance. Then, head over to the archaeological site where theyve been uncovering historic treasures for more than 20 years! Day 4: Clarenville – Cape Bonavista – ClarenvilleIn Trinity Village, relive days gone by during visits to historic buildings including the Georgian Lester-Garland House and the Green Family Forge, a living history blacksmith museum. At Cape Bonavista, pause at the lighthouse to take in the sweeping views you may even spot an iceberg! Day 5: Clarenville – Terra Nova National Park – Twillingate – GanderTravel to breathtaking Terra Nova National Park where the forest meets the sea. Stand in awe of the parks towering cliffs and tranquil bays. Spend some time exploring the Marine Atlantic Centre which features an interactive exhibit introducing you to the regions marine life. Next, venture to Twillingates Long Point Lighthouse, a location that affords prime viewing over Iceberg Alley. This evening, prepare for a rollicking good time at a traditional Newfoundland gathering known as a Jiggs dinner. Day 6: Gander – Rocky HarbourDepart Gander and head to Boyds Cove. Explore the Beothuk Interpretation Centre where youll learn about Beothuk Village and its indigenous people who lived here over 300 years ago. Then, enjoy a short walk along a trail that showcases the house pits, the only evidence left of these now extinct residents. Later, arrive in Rocky Harbour for your two-night stay. Day 7: Gros Morne National ParkThis morning we visit the Discovery Centre and learn how natural forces have shaped the parks landscape of dramatic vistas that are among the most spectacular in Atlantic Canada. Today the choice is yours! Explore Tableland Mountains and uncover the parks hidden fjords, stark peaks and highland tundra; or perhaps you will choose to stroll through the strata formations at Green Point to learn about the earths history and why Green Point is a geologists dream! Next, board a boat to experience the fjords from a new perspective and watch for whales and eagles while listening to traditional Newfoundland music. Then become an honorary Newfoundlander when you participate in a Screech-In ceremony that seals your new status with a shot of rum. Tonight, enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner while overlooking the scenic waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Day 8: Rocky Harbour – St. AnthonyJourney along the Viking Trail to LAnse aux Meadows and travel back to A.D. 1000 when Vikings first made landfall. See how Newfoundlanders have adapted to this forbidding landscape and experience firsthand their unique solutions to living under extreme conditions. Later, a visit to an economuseum reveals the famous local partridgeberry and bakeapple and how you can make them into jams, sauces and vinegars. Day 9: St. Anthony – LAnse Au Clair, LabradorBoard a ferry this morning and cross the Straits of Belle Isle to Labrador. Learn about the history and importance of whaling to this region as you pass by colorful fishing villages. Arrive in Red Bay and spend some time at Red Bay National Historic Site. This UNESCO World Heritage site recounts the traditions of Basque whalers in the 16th century. Day 10: LAnse Au Clair – Corner Brook, NewfoundlandA morning ferry ride returns you to Newfoundland. Todays journey brings you along the roads that Captain James Cook travelled back in 1770. Sit back and take in the spectacular scenery that unfolds along the way. Be sure to have your camera ready! Day 11: Corner BrookWalk in the footsteps of a great explorer at Captain James Cook National Historic Site before your stop at the breathtaking Bay of Islands on your way to picturesque Lark Harbour. This afternoon, make your way to the Butterfly House; behold hundreds of vibrant butterflies and enjoy the tranquility of the garden. Continue on to a local mineral and stone specialist for a discussion on labradorite, a colorful stone that is said to have mystical powers. Tonight, a trio known as the Sharecroppers will delight you with a variety of traditional and original songs. Day 12: Corner Brook – Tour EndsYour tour comes to a close today in Corner Brook. |
