Classic Bernina Express

Overview

Take a memorable journey through some of the most picturesque
scenery in the world aboard the Bernina Express, and ascend through
the Alps to St. Moritz. Discover Italy’s Lake Como, journey through
the vineyards of Velting, and visit Tirano and Lugano.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Lugano

Travel by rail or air from London to Zrich then continue by
rail to Lugano, situated in a bay on the northern side of Lake
Lugano, which boasts a Mediterranean climate alongside beautiful
architecture and parkland. The traffic-free centre is a joy to
discover, and after checking into your hotel you have some free
time to begin exploring. Perhaps take a walk along the lakeside
promenade and make a visit to the Belvedere Gardens, which offers
glorious floral displays as well as wonderful views out over the
bay.

Day 2

Exploring Lugano

Today, why not take an excursion by boat to the picturesque
Italian-speaking fishing village of Gandria? Nestled at the foot of
Mont Br, here you can wander through the enchanting cobbled
streets, enjoy a relaxing break at one of the many lakeside cafs
and visit the 16th century San Vigilio Bell Tower.

Day 3

The Bernina Express

Board the Bernina Express bus at Lugano main station for the
first part of an unforgetable journey through Italy to the
Graubunden region of Switzerland. Travel along the banks of Lake
Como and through the vineyards of Velting before reaching the
border town of Tirano. Here you change onto the narrow-gauge
Bernina Express train for one of the most impressive scenic routes
Switzerland has to offer. Travel over the Albula Pass into the
Engadine Valley, before climbing even higher over the spectacular
Bernina Pass to Poschiavo before descending to St Mortiz where you
spend the next two nights.

Day 4

At leisure in St Moritz

Today you are free to discover the glamourous resort of St
Moritz. You might like to explore using the town’s cable car
system, taking the Diavolezza 9,970 feet above sea level for
stunning views over the surrounding peaks. Otherwise you could
travel further afield to the mountain villages of Scuol, Samnaun or
Zernez.

Return to the UK

Transfer to Zrich by rail for your flight or rail journey back
