Expected to take around 10 days to really see it all along the way expect to be amazed by white sand beaches like those at Jervis Bay. Discover the national parks full of different wildlife or sip on some of the tastiest wines the world has to offer at one of the many vineyards you will find on your way down to Melbourne on this unforgettable road trip!
First stop on our list was Kiama but your adventure doesn’t start here as on your journey to Kiama you will find the start of the Grand Pacific Drive. Take a dip at Stanwell Tops a village in north Wollongong famous for its beauty and also very popular among fans of hang-gliding and paragliding a great place to watch them soar above the cliffs and ocean – head up to the view point on Bald Hill Lookout for the best views of Stanwell Park Beach.
If you have time pop into Wollongong for a bite to eat and experience the laid back vibe of the seaside town for a bite to eat at one of the many quirky cafes it’s started to get a reputation for.
Carrying on your drive you will suddenly find yourself on the Sea Cliff Bridge, pretty self explanatory in the name itself – a huge bridge hugging onto the cliff providing great views and if you have time park up and have a stroll along the cliff side a grab the perfect picture of the impressive structure.
After a hours drive via the scenic Illawarra Lake and Shellharbour you’ll find yourself in Kiama.Home to the famous Kiama blowhole which shoots water 200 feet in the air – as well as this there is a number of beaches and rock pools for you to explore, after your day of sightseeing and relaxing head to the Kiama Fish Market for some of the best seafood on the coast for you to feast on.
Making more progress down the coast you will find yourself in the quaint township of Berry, the perfect place to stop for breakfast at one of the many bakeries you will come across all selling pastries and coffee which will fuel you for your day ahead. One hour later you will find yourself in what I would say was the highlight of my journey down this coast – Jervis Bay.
Famous for it’s white sand beaches and turquoise waters rivalling those of the Whitsundays as some of the best beaches Australia has to offer especially Hyams Beach, you can spend the day snorkelling in the clear waters trying to spot the different types of marine life a very popular place to swim with the resident dolphins in which play in the bay all year round.
It’s also one of the best places inAustraliato witness whales on their annual migrations, humpbacks and southern right whales can be seen both offshore and inside the calmer waters of the bay from June through to November.
Take advantage of the tranquil waters and take part in one of the many water sports on offer such as stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and even surfing for the more experiences sea dwellers in the many bay and ocean beaches, lagoons, secret coves and hidden creeks where you can find yourself some of the very best swimming spots in the area.
Beautiful beaches is not all Jervis Bay has to offer, with a number of bush walks through the surrounding national parks allowing you to become one with nature discoveringkangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, wombats, and many rare bird and animal species in their natural habitat especially Pebble Beach which tends to be occupied by a number of wallabies and kangaroos.
After your day out in the nature head to the unspoiled coastal and country villages with their local produce markets, boutique shops, art galleries and a terrific museum. The area boasts world-class cafes, restaurants, pubs, wine bars and a burgeoning music scene to keep you occupied during the night.
Heading further down the coast you stumble across Batesmans Bay a great place to browse local produce at the number of boutiques selling woodwork and jewellery made by traditional craftspeople from the area, head to Mimosa Rocks National Park where you can swim and snorkel in the lagoon, following this sample the famous cheese of the area known as Bega.
Continue your food tour if your belly isn’t full in Pambula you can find some of the very best oysters in the area some of the freshest you can possibly get in the whole of the region again not to forget it is another great spot to find some wildlife with a number of whale watching tours where you can expect to see dolphins, seals and eagles all off the coast.
Crossing the border into Victoria you will find yourself in the coastal town of Mallacoota which boast a range of shimmering lake where you can hire a kayak and paddle up to Gipsy Point via the Genoa or Wallagaraugh rivers, here at Gipsy Point you can get close up and face to face enjoying a picnic with kangaroos and some amazing birds which the area is famous for.
Keep going a further two hours south towards Melbourne and you’ll find the beautiful Wilsons Promontory National Park which consists of a huge forest full of eucalyptus trees native to the local area. You can hike through, most people tend to partake in the Pilly Gully Nature Walk – a 1.6 mile hike which leads you to Squeaky Beach aptly named because of the fine sand which squeaks when you shuffle across the beach.
This area is also popular among divers as surrounding areas with a number of hidden coves and caves to explore reeling with coral which brings in marine life such as starfish, crayfish, lobster and the mysterious sea dragon.
Up next is another favourite of mine Phillip Island. Home to Australia’s largest wild fur seal colony which can be found at Seal Rocks discovered on one of the many tours available from the ports or booked through one of our team. I suggest Wildlife Coast Cruises setting off daily at around 2pm this a company that specialises in a unique tour. Proving their experience and bringing you to the best place in Australia to see the seals in their natural habitat but don’t just expect to see seals keep an eye out for various different types of wildlife in which occupy this area.
Now for what I remember most from my experience on Phillip Island, the penguin parade! During the evening get your seats on the beach and watch the penguins return from their day at sea and head to back to their burrows for a good nights kip, waddling in they entertain revellers with their hilarious mannerisms providing a great parade to keep you entertained before your evening in one of the local resorts or guesthouses.
Next up it’s time to relax after a journey of swimming, hiking and wildlife spotting and where’s better than an outdoor soak in one of the Peninsula Hot Springs which consists of twenty outdoor soaking pools set in the luscious country side allowing you to relax amongst the wild with birds singing in the background.
Whilst sipping on some of the local wines, toast your adventure down the east coast and if this doesn’t suffice your taste for wine theres a number of cellars and vineyards you can visit before you hit the bright lights of Melbourne which is a further 90km drive away.
