Points of interest inSri Lanka
A Buddhist country at heart, there are plenty of temples toexplore away from the coast, many of which are hugely impressive, not tomention culturally significant. The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is perhaps oneof the most famous, due to the fact that an original tooth of the Buddhahimself is housed here. Just behind the temple is the 257 acre UdawattakeleForest Park, where you can see (and hear) a huge variety of birds and monkeys.
The monastic complex in Anuradhapura, Ritigala, is anotherreligious landmark, which is important historically. This is where the herbs, flowers and plants used in Ayurveda medicines were first grown.
No trip to Sri Lanka is complete, without seeing the nativeelephants in the flesh. For this, you can either visit the Millennium ElephantFoundation, to see rescued elephants washing in the river, or you could takepart on a game drive in the Yala National Park. Here, youll also have theopportunity to spot leopards, sloth bears, wild boar, grey langurs andcrocodiles. Elephants also present at the Minneriya Sanctuary, where they livealongside buffalo and wild boar.
The natural landscape here is beautiful and a few highlightsof all tours here include enjoying a picnic at the bottom of the Ellawaterfall, taking in the view as you climb up the steps to the 5thcentury rock fortress, Sigiriya, and soaking up the relaxing atmosphere of thebeaches at Trincomalee.
