Destination Amsterdam Amsterdam is crisscrossed with peaceful canals that in turn are lined with trees and pretty seventeenth century houses, the al fresco seating of quirky cafes and the angular shadows cast by modernist sculptures. The city blends history, art and urban modernism together effortlessly to make one of Europes most enticing and memorable destinations. Any highlight of a city break to Amsterdam is a simple stroll through the cobbled streets. As you stroll, youll note that bikes and boats are the most popular transportation – and if you feel the need to join in then youll find plenty of bike rental shops dotted around the city. For those wanting to take to the waters you can board an open topped canal boats or simply hire a little rowing boat and row yourself through the peaceful canals. Some of the highlights of a walk around the city include the cobbled Old Town, which is home to more than 7000 registered historic buildings, the UNESCO listed Canal Ring and the stylish South of the city, which is home to the museum quarter and the Vondelpark. On your way youll stumble down hidden lanes and lively quarters that are brought to life by colourful bars and random street side works of art, colourful gardens, monasteries and shops selling everything from Jenever Gin to Amsterdam themed souvenirs – in the regiment colour orange of course. Elsewhere in the city the exciting Jordaan district is where youll find a collection of art galleries, chic boutiques and lively restaurants, and the Canal Ring, mainly a residential area that is popular with Dutch celebrities and home to a few high-end nightlife spots in the Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein areas. Its a great neighbourhood to ramble through – taking in the 17th century mansions and waterside homes. When it comes to art – Amsterdam delivers. The Van Gogh Museum has the worlds largest collection of Van Goghs (only fair as he was native to Amsterdam), while the newly restored Rijksmuseum houses works of art from the likes of Rembrandt and Vermeer. To complete a tour of Amsterdams museums – head to the Plantage district where youll find, amongst others, the Jewish Historical Museum, The Hermitage Amsterdam and the botanical gardens. The nightlife scene in Amsterdam is always lively – you can choose from live music bars, traditional cafes, designer cocktail bars and state-of-the-art clubs with the chic clientele to match. Theres an eclectic collection of restaurants too, spanning Dutch cuisine through to Asian and Surinamese (a former Dutch colony). We suggest you try a local speciality such as Ossenworst (raw beef sausage) or one of the many locally produced Dutch cheeses, instead. City breaks to Amsterdam are a truly incredible and varied experience.
