of adventure. Whether youre taking the Eurostar, a TGV through Europe or an epicadventure on the Trans-Siberian Express – rail travel is one of the finest and most enduringways to travel. Read on for a few of our favourite rail journeys in Europe.
London to Venice – The most notable way to travel between these two great cities is byboarding the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express. Travelling with Great Rail Journeys forexample will take you on a fantastic guided tour starting off in London and taking youthrough Paris, Milan and finally to Venice. After this youll board the Express and traversethe breathtaking Dolomites and onwards into Austria before bedding down for the night. Inthe morning youll arrive back in Paris from where you can choose to either take theEurostar to London or board the Orient Express Pullman to complete your journey in truestyle.
The Trans-Siberian Express – There is no better rail journey in our opinion and its besttaken during the cold months of winter. Imagine it – long nights aboard one of the mostluxurious and impressive trains whilst snow tops the edges of mountains and starsshimmer above. There are plenty of options including taking the train to Berlin and from
there to Moscow before boarding the Trans-Siberian Express. From there youll seeRussias Onion topped cathedrals in Moscow through Novosibirsk, Irkutsk and Vladivostok– where youll alight the train. In between that the train will stop off in places as remote asUlaanbaatar in Mongolia, the Amur Rivers – close to the China/Russia border, and Vladimirand Suzdal.
Overnight Rail Journeys – There are of course plenty, but one of our favourites isundoubtedly the Caledonian Sleeper Train between London and Scotland (you candisembark in a variety of locations from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Inverness andAberdeen), and its a great option for those who want to experience overnight train travel
without the added expenses of longer trips as there are offers available throughout theyear.
We also love the overnight trains in Thailand between Bangkok and the north –Chiang Mai, and Bangkok and the south – Surat Thani – which is by far the best way tohead to the southern islands. For something a little different try the overnight train betweenOslo and Trondheim which takes you through incredible mountain and lake landscapesand past beautiful wildlife.
The World – Perhaps exploring the entire world by train is not in everyones reach – butwhy not aim high? You could of course create a bespoke itinerary yourself – taking yourselfon the railways of every continent – exploring the countrys as you go – or you could rely on
the expertise of someone like Great Rail Journeys, who have a fantastic tour entitled –Around the World in 53 Days – which takes passengers on a 23,000 mile roundtrip of theworld.
