One of our travel agents Sarah, recently went on a Hurtigruten Tour and this is what she had to say about her trip
I was recently very privileged to be able to go on a trip with Hurtigrutenon boardthe Trollfjord.
We flew with SAS from Manchester via Oslo.
The cabin crew were very efficient and looked after us very well.
I recommend taking your own sandwiches etc. bought from Boots at the airport, as the service on board is limited and expensive.
We arrived in Tromso early evening and did the dog sledging excursion.
The dog sledging was a great experience and fun to do.
We first saw the Northern Lights whilst going through the wilderness with the dogs.
Wow, we didnt think we would be so luck to see them this soon into the trip.
Just make sure that you sit at the back of the sledge and not the front. Not a good idea to be too close to the dogs when they are running!
We then entered a tepee tent with a roaring log fire and were offered Reindeer soup and Reindeer stew followed by chocolate cake and wine/coffee.
The stew was quite nice surprisingly.
We then visited the Rica Hotel in Tromso whilst waiting for the Trollfjord to arrive at midnight.
The Rica Hotel is a great hotel and has a wonderful view of Tromso and the Arctic Cathedral.
We joined the Trollfjord just after midnight, off loaded our luggage and then dashed up to the sun deck to see if we could see the Northern Lights.
Within a few moments we were amazed to have the most beautiful display of the lights that lasted about 2 hours.
The colours were fantastic and the Lights were swirling around us and twinkling like piano keys being played.
I recommend lying down on the sun deck floor to see the Lights as this saves your neck from the strain!
People may think you are mad but who cares what you look like!
We were there for three nights and saw the Lights every night.
There is information on the ship on how to take the perfect picture of the Lights and how to set your camera.
Take a blanket with you or take one of the bed to wrap up warm in as you will be sat on deck for a long time!
Take a thermal cup with you also to have that warm drink with you at all times!
We then sailed along the coastline and the scenery was fantastic.
We visited a few ports of call including Harstad where we enjoyed the Taste of the Vesteralen excursion.
We saw a few reindeer, moose, and a few Sea Eagles.
We had an early morning wakeup call on the day we crossed the Arctic Circle announcing that they were about to do the Arctic crossing ceremony.
Little did we know that we were queuing up for a rather large spoonful of cod liver oil.
Not to be recommended on an empty stomach!
Especially after a few wines the night before!
I went a funny shade of green and was given plenty of space!
We were very lucky to be able to sail down the Trollfjord. This is not usually possible in the winter months but as it was so cold we were able to this safely. Even the crew were excited at this happening.
After a couple more ports of call we arrived in Trondheim for the excursion.
Trondheim is a lovely Medieval city and we visited the Cathedral and the fort and enjoyed the views.
The Trollfjord is one of Hurtigrutens newest ships and I really enjoyed my time on board.
The cabins are comfortable and the food was exceptionally good.
There was plenty of choice for breakfast and lunch and the evening meal was a set meal served to us.
I have no complaint with the food, it was all very enjoyable, especially the deserts. The crew do everything possible to make your time on board a great experience.I was in an I grade inside cabin which was sufficient but I do recommend upgrading is you can to an N grade or above.
There are no coffee making facilities so take your own.
I also think that it would be a good idea to take your own bath towels as the ones provided are only ideal if you are a size 8 and 4 foot tall!!
Take your own hairdryer also as the one in the cabin is not the best.
The suites were amazing and offered lots of room and a balcony, great for having your own private light show!
This trip was certainly one of the best experiences I have had.
It really is a trip of a lifetime and one not to be missed.
