Discovering wildlife in Madagascar
Madagascar is an unspoiled island paradise off the south east coast of Africa that contains diverse animal life, which can’t be seen living in the wild anywhere else. The lemur is probably Madagascar’s most famous furry export and you’ll see them here in abundance.
Exploring this islands flora and fauna will inspire and amaze you, as you travel safely along trails few before you have witnessed. We partner with two very established travel companies, who provide all inclusive escorted tours to Madagascar; Cox and Kings and Kuoni and we thought in this post wed give you a taste of the backdrop you can expect in Madagascars exceptionally wild spaces.
Andasibe- Mantadia National Park
Situated in eastern Madagascar, this huge expense of diverse landscapes is a World Heritage site. It’s humid, full of rain and hosts many programmes that are designed to re-introduce rare and endangered species back to the wild.
Part of the Andasibe Mantadia National Park, this reserve is full of mountain scenery and humid forests. Babbling streams will pass you as you travel along the ridges and down the valleys on your way to swim in the sparkling waters of the Rianasoa natural pool or walk through the exquisite orchid gardens. As you circumnavigate the lakes, keep your eyes out for ghettos, snakes, eagles, and of course, lemurs.
This is also part of the wider Andasibe- Mantadia National Park, but this area is known as one of the best places to get up close and personal with the lemurs. Watch them feed and even have a chance to stroke one. The wildlife here is unafraid to approach you.
The terrain here is mountainous and filled with tropical rainforest. Take a local guide on an exploration with you to find the golden bamboo lemur and the eastern woolly lemur. If at first you can’t see them, look up into the trees where they may be sitting and eating fruit. Youll pass tranquil stretches of water and bubbling waterfalls. Nearby traditional village, Tandala is also well worth a visit, as is the ValBio research station.
Isalo National Park
Carved into the sandstone, the Isalo National Park is awash with canyons and grassy plains buried low in deep gorges. You’ll discover natural pools and caves in the dramatic landscape and as you trek, you are likely to spot ring tailed lemurs, snakes, chameleons and a huge array of exotic calling birds. Trek on foot or by horseback, but be sure to take a guide. Visiting at night will also prove to be a memorable stargazing experience.
