Costa Rica
When you think of the eco-paradise that is Costa Rica, what do you imagine? Rainforests and majestic volcanoes perhaps? Maybe a rugged coastline with Caribbean white sand and perfect surf? If thats the case, youd not be far wrong. Add into the mix what many claim to be the best coffee in the world, turtles crawling up the beaches to lay their eggs, and hummingbirds filling the skies.
Its easy to see why this humble Central American country has been named the happiest in the world. Here, you can spot exotic wildlife, allow the cooling mists of cloud forests and spectacular waterfalls to moisten your skin, and relax in the yoga-calm vibe. People are happy here because its beautiful, full of nature and laid-back. Your adventures can unfold as quickly or as slowly as you want.
Top attractions
Youve probably heard of at least one nature trail undertaken by a friend or family member, which has offered up only a very disappointing selection of wildlife to view. However, in places like the Manuel Antonio National Park and the Monteverde Cloud Forest, the animals are practically waving at you from the canopy as you enter!
Sloths, birds, pumas, jaguars, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys and capuchins are plentiful here and if you dont spot them on the paths that serve the guided walks, theres a good chance youll see them on the wooden bridges and chairlifts that occupy the spaces above you; between the highest tree branches. The bravest among you may also choose the zip wire option, during which you can expect a very up close and personal experience with the local flora and fauna!
For turtles in their natural habitat, laying their eggs and making their way lazily through the waves, youll want to head for the Caribbean coastline and Tortuguero National Park. This is the home of the Green Sea Turtle breeding grounds.
The volcanoes in Costa Rica, like the national parks, are lively! Arenal is the tourists favourite with its classically conical shape, ash columns and observatory, but Iraz is higher still. At 3342m high it is sometimes possible to see both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts from its summit on a clear day.
