We arrived at the Club Med resort of Opio, which is a hour or so drive from Nice airport, and were greeted by a friendly swarm of G.O’s, who gladly whisked away our luggage. This allowed us a moment to take in the stunning location of the resort; hidden in the hills overlooking the Cannes coastline surrounded by olive groves and pine forests.
The Provencal style rooms at Club Med Opio were simple, clean and new. The grounds of the resort allow you to walk around lazily and bare-footed enjoying the views.
The main pool area is the heart of the resort. this is where families come to settle for the day and is where the famous Club Med sun dance takes place. The infinity pool offers a quiet retreat for adults once the kids have been sent off to kids the mini club. The huge luxurious lounge beds and olive tree surroundings make it very easy to relax here. The pool guard also keeps a close ear on noise levels, which ensures no one disturbs the peace.
Like all Club Meds, food was hard to avoid here! Lavish mid-afternoon snacks were laid out around the pool area each day, which along with the cocktail of the day, were a nice run up to dinner. The food in the resort was outstanding, even by Club Med standards. Themed cuisines offered a excellent variety throughout the week, so you never get bored. The seafood night was definitely the best of the trip. Watching your lobster being freshly prepared in front of you was a special treat, and the mountain of succulent shrimp, mussels and oysters were spectacular.
There is certainly something for everyone at the buffet, and you find yourself making a few trips from the table to experience it all. The restaurant has the effect of making you want to dress elegantly for the occasion, and the views from the restaurant terrace are a nice accompaniment.
Club Med are known for their entertainment, which was both slick and professional and enjoyable for all ages, particularly the circus show. The night club is also worth a trip. Friendly GO’s use this as an opportunity to relax and hit the dance floor, and the bar men are happy mix up an array of cocktails!
On the Sunday local traders were invited into the resort to set up mini stalls offering fresh French produce, arts and crafts. This was a great way of picking up gifts without having to leave the hotel; I recommend picking up some of the home made pesto on offer, the best I have ever tasted!
We filled our days with a mixure of relaxing by the pools or enjoying the variety of activities on offer. The flying trapeze is definitely worth a go and is surprisingly fun, despite how scary it looks! The instructors look like they have just step ped out of the circus, so you are in safe hands. The tennis and golf facilities are also of pleasing standards.
The excursions are of the best variety, because the village is located within a forty minute drive of the best that Provence has to offer. Days out to Cannes, home of the famous annual film festival, and Saint Paul-de-Venece are both worth a trip to experience both the glamour and history of the French Riviera.
The Club Med Opio resort, all in such tranquil surroundings, there is n o reason to ever leave this place
