Apulia & Vieste

Journey south to Apulia to the tip of Italy’s heel and explore a region that is rich in extravagant architecture and home to charming trulli houses. Discover the ancient whitewashed villages and dramatic rock formations of Vieste, located on the spur of Italy’s boot… this tour will surprise and delight even the most seasoned Italian traveller.

Itinerary:

DAY 1 UK/Bari

We fly to Bari and transfer to the small Apulian village of Felline on the western coast of Italy’s heel, for four nights on a half board basis.

DAYS 2 – 4 Apulia

Silver olive groves, dense forests and sun-kissed beaches are the hallmarks of Apulia, an area still relatively unexplored by tourists.

Three excursions are included during your stay in Feline:

Gallipoli (half day)

We enjoy a guided tour of Gallipoli with its atmospheric Old Town of twisting whitewashed streets and Aragonese castle.

Lecce (¾ day)

A relatively unexplored town, Lecce’s extravagant baroque architecture has earned it the name of ‘Florence of Apulia’.

Capo Santa Maria di Leuca & Otranto (full day)

We travel to the very tip of Italy’s heel to visit Capo Santa Maria di Leuca. Here, white limestone cliffs support a tiny church, built on the site of an ancient church dedicated to Minerva. We continue along the pretty coastal road to Otranto, a tiny town that nestles around its harbour. It is home to a 15th-century castle and a Norman cathedral.

DAY 5 Alberobello & Vieste

We journey north this morning, passing through the evocative Apulian landscape and looking forward to what is certain to be a highlight of our holiday, a visit to Alberobello. as we draw nearer to the town, you’ll spot Trulli houses dotting the landscape, but it’s the profusion of these cylindrical, beehive-style houses in Alberobello that is most beguiling. Wander through the charming streets where many of the Trulli owners are happy to welcome you inside. Our journey continues to the Gargano Peninsula, a high rocky spur jutting into the Adriatic Sea. the scenery is beautiful as the road hugs the dramatic coastline en route to Vieste, our base for the next five nights.

DAYS 6–9 Vieste

The tiny town of Vieste is tucked between two sickle-shaped beaches on the eastern flank of Gargano, a mountainous promontory aptly described as the spur on Italy’s boot. Seen from the sea, with its whitewashed houses, alleyways, flowery arches and small squares, it’s easy to see why it has been dubbed the Queen of Cape Gargano.

We have included the following excursions:

Vieste & Peschic (¾ day)

Enjoy a visit to two of the most beautiful small towns on the Gargano – nearby Vieste itself and Peschici, just 30 minutes away on the northern coast.

Monte Sant’Angelo (half day)

Monte Sant’Angelo is home to perhaps the most famous shrine in the Latin West, dedicated to Archangel Saint Michael.

You may also wish to join our optional excursions:

Umbran Forest (half day)

Enjoy a walk through the famous Umbran Forest. We also enjoy a delicious picnic under the shade of the trees.

Boat Cruise (half day)

The best way to see the beauty of the Gargano is from the sea. We spend an enjoyable few hours visiting the beaches, grottoes, stunning rock formations and tiny coves along the coast.

DAY 10 Vieste/UK

We transfer to Bari airport for the homeward flight.
